CARL VERHEYEN - ROCK LICK LEGENDS
In this edition of Rock Lick Legends we take a look at some of the techniques of Carl Verheyen. Apart from working with an incredible roster of artists, Verheyen has had considerable success as a solo artist with albums such as Atlas Overload, Slingshot, Slang Justice, Garage Sale and No Borders, each album demonstrating a great command of numerous styles of music from rock, country, jazz, to blues.
In this column I have prepared examples that are from the bluesy side of Verheyen’s playing, but with emphasis on his string skipping technique. In places I have expanded the minor pentatonic scale to include the #4, natural 6, and the odd chromatic to illustrate Verheyen type nuances.
Carl Verheyen plays mainly Fender Strats and Gibson guitars through Marshalls, Vox, or Fender amps. For effects, Verheyen uses a RAT pedal, wah-wah, Voodoo-labs Croq Pro Octavia, and a Lexicon MPX 100.
