In this edition of Rock Lick Legends we take a look at the pentatonic playing of Eric Johnson. Johnson uses the pentatonic in abundance with refinement and creativity, his fast picking style and speedy digital-like pentatonic patterns are an integral part of his playing and in this issue we will examine some of those techniques. I have also included examples of his string skipping approaches and characteristic vibratos.

Eric Johnson uses vintage 100-Watt Marshall Heads with 4X12 Cabinets with Fender Twin Reverb Amps. Johnson has a two-amp setup with Fender Twins for a clean rhythm sound, and Marshalls for solos. Johnson favours the Fender Stratocaster but he occasionally uses Gibsons.
