In this edition of Rock Lick Legends we take a look at some of the techniques used within the mixolydain mode by John Petrucci. Petrucci is well known as a founding member of the progressive metal group Dream Theater. He has made instructional videos which showcase some of his techniques, as well as a book called 'John Petrucci's Wild Stringdom'. Petrucci has toured with Satriani and Vai on the G3 tour.

John Petrucci uses Ernie Ball/MusicMan signature guitars, he mostly uses the six string model but there is also a seven string. In the neck position Petrucci opts for a modified DiMarzio and in the bridge, a DiMarzio D-Sonic. Amplification is an assortment of Mesa Boogie amps, including Roadkings and Lonestars, 2 2x12 and 2 4x12 Mesa cabinets.
